On September 16, Daphiralin Jyrwa had to deliver a male baby inside a tourist taxi in West Khasi Hills district as the vehicle expectant mother was travelling got stucked for several hours due to huge traffic jam due to unsystematic parking of hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the Shillong-Nongstoin National Highway and thousands of people both anglers and viewers witnessing the angling competition.
Officials on Tuesday said that NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has asked the Meghalaya Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report on the incident within a week to the commission.
She asked the state government to extend all possible support to the woman of the deceased baby.
The issue was also raised on Tuesday in the Meghalaya assembly session.
Opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) MLA Adelbert Nongrum moved a motion in the house seeking a report from the government about what action has been taken against the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills district for allowing the fishing competition at Pamphymai Lake without ensuring the law and order issues.
The legislator also wanted whether the district Superintendent of Police posted police personnel to help the organisers to conduct the competition, prize distribution ceremony and managing the traffic and crowd control.
