India All-rounder Washington Sundar Tests Positive For Covid-19, Remains In Doubt For South Africa ODIs: Report

New Delhi: The Indian cricket team has suffered a major blow ahead of the three-match ODI series against South Africa. Star all-rounder Washington Sundar, who was set to make a comeback after being out of the team due to injury, has now reportedly tested positive for Coronavirus. Dark clouds now loom over his participation in the Ind vs SA ODI series and BCCI might soon announce his replacement. India is scheduled to play first ODI against South Africa on January 19.

“He tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

The Indian ODI squad will fly to South Africa on January 12. Sundar’s participation in the upcoming Ind vs SA ODI series is in doubt as the all-rounder unfortunately contracted the dreaded infection.

“I have nothing to comment, I will come back to you soon,” Washington Sundar had told Cricbuzz on Tuesday, January 11, when asked whether he has tested Covid-19 positive or not.

Sundar missing out the ODI series against Proteas come as a big blow for the Indian squad as all-rounder like Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja already aren’t part of the squad touring South Africa.

Rohit Sharma is yet to recover from his injury and hence he’s not part of India’s ODI team. KL Rahul has been named captain of the team in Rohit’s absence.

The first two matches of the ODI series are scheduled to be played on January 19 and 21 at Boland Park in Paarl, while the third ODI match will be played at Newlands in Cape Town on January 23.
