Himachal bypoll results: CM Jai Ram Thakur accepts defeat, Congress says BJP was overconfident | Shimla News

SHIMLA: Amid tall claims of ensuring development under its last four years rule, crushing defeat in the byelection has now forced the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to introspect the reasons leading to unexpected defeat in Mandi parliamentary seat along with Fatehpur, Arki and Jubbal-Kotkhai assembly seats.
While chief minister Jai Ram Thakur said that the party will surely look into the reasons for defeat, AICC Secretary and in-charge of Mandi parliamentary seat, Sudhir Sharma, said that unity of Congress leaders and workers against overconfident BJP played a key role in the victory of Congress candidates.
After the announcement of by-election results, chief minister Jai Ram Thakur interacted with media in Shimla on Tuesday.
While accepting and owning the responsibility of their defeat, he said that he respects the verdict of the people.
While indicating wards sabotage, he said that many people were in BJP to show while actually, they were not.
He said that party leadership would surely look into the issue of those who did not work for the party or who worked against it. He said that party leaders would sit together to chalk out a strategy for 2022 assembly elections while taking into account the shortcomings of the byelections.
Jai Ram Thakur said that Congress has won the byelection of Mandi parliamentary seat by the thinnest margin of history so there is nothing to celebrate for the party.
He said this is not the first time when the party in power has lost the election. He said that Congress came to power in 2012 and in the 2014 parliamentary election, it lost all four parliamentary seats to BJP.
“Then Congress was in power for around two years while we are in power for last four years,” he added.
He said that inflation is an issue not only in Himachal Pradesh or India but across the world and Congress used it as its biggest weapon in the byelection campaign.
He said that the sympathy wave for late Virbhadra Singh also played a major role as Congress got lead in Rampur, Kinnaur, Bharmaur and other tribal areas. The chief minister further added that around 13,000 votes polled under NOTA also played their part.
Senior Congress leader and former minister Sudhir Sharma said that Congress had campaigned in the byelection under a set strategy. He said that in Mandi parliamentary seat, the party raised the issues of public importance like inflation, unemployment and lack of development in the area. He said that to ensure the victory of the BJP candidate, the entire government was camping in Mandi parliamentary seat and chief minister Jai Ram Thakur himself was leading from the front.
He said that the failure of BJP to contain the dissidence, especially to pacify former minister and sitting MLA Anil Sharma and failure to contain the Brahmin votes resulted in the BJP’s defeat on Mandi seat. He said that to secure the Brahmin vote bank, BJP at the last moment had roped in former chief minister Shanta Kumar in the campaigning but by that time it was too late.
He said that the results of byelections are an indication that the people of Himachal Pradesh has made up their mind to throw the BJP out of power in 2022. He said that after winning all four seats, Congress will enter the assembly election with new energy.
Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Kuldeep Singh Rathore said that the chief minister has lost the confidence of the people of Himachal Pradesh and the results of this byelection are a referendum against the ruling BJP Government and he should resign on moral grounds.
BJP state president Suresh Kashyap said that the results of byelections did not come as per the expectation of BJP. He said that the party will review all the election results on all assembly seats as well as Mandi parliamentary seat to know why the party failed to secure enough votes to win the election. He said that shortcomings would be assessed and improvements would be made accordingly.
