Python rocks & rolls across Chandigarh Golf Club again | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: If birdies, eagles and albatrosses denote excellence in the pursuit of golf, the 2nd and 3rd holes at the fabled Chandigarh Golf Club can be christened the ‘python holes’! A 6-foot Rock python was discovered in the roughs flanking the left bunker at the par 3, 3rd hole, by greenskeepers who were in the process of removing the debris of a fallen ‘papri’ tree in preparation for next week’s Hero Ladies Professional Golf Tour.
A year back, a much bigger python measuring 10 ft was found by a ball spotter, Manzoor Ali, before it was rescued and removed by the UT forest and wildlife department team from the left roughs near to the green of the par 5, 2nd hole, on October 15. A few years before that, another big python was rescued from the left roughs in proximity to the tee box of the 2nd hole.
The left roughs of the 2nd and 3rd hole run contiguously along the road that leads to Kishangarh village and are separated by the same road from the thick bush and tree jungles that cover Sukhna Lake’s embankment. The left roughs of these two holes lend themselves to a python habitat as they are quite broad and thickly foliaged, have a nullah running through them and are in proximity to the Sukhna jungles.
These roughs have some massive bougainvillea bushes that spread many yards across and can virtually hide a dozen pythons at a time! The 3rd hole’s green, which is surrounded by thick jungles to its left and back edge, is a favoured habitat for Rat snakes and cobras to bask on a quiet winter day. Caddies recount with much glee the exact spots where serpents bask at the 3rd hole.
When the rescue team arrived for the latest rescue, the python made off for the cover afforded by a thick bougainvillea. Greenskeepers then used machines to cut around the bougainvillea so that the rescue team could safely get the python into the open. It was released later in the Sukhna Wildlife sanctuary.
Python rescues pick up in the winter months when these mighty, non-venomous serpents go dormant in burrows but regularly come out to bask in the sun at regular haunts. They are spotted by anxious residents and rescue teams are summoned for rescue, removal and rehab in nearby jungles.
