KAPURTHALA: Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday said that either he would remain in Punjab or corruption and whatever time he has got would be used to eradicate it. Channi also said that he needed cooperation from people, especially the youth, to break the old and strong nexuses to finish the leeches. Stating that has asked the officials to provide one lakh government jobs, he announced that Class D employees would also be recruited on regular basis in place of contractual basis.
“Corruption will not be tolerated till I am in power, either I shall remain or corruption,” he said while, addressing a function after laying foundation stone of Dr B R Ambedkar museum at Punjab Technical University.
Recalling his personal experience, he said that as municipal committee president he had found that 22% cut was routine phenomena in MC works. “I tried to stop it but could not succeed completely as MC president but I managed to reduce it. The MC president cannot end it as the corruption racket is so strong. But now that I have gotten the power (as CM), I shall finish it,” he said. He also narrated an incident how even waste collecting drums were being priced very high due to the cut taken by officials.
Strongly pitching for recruitment of Class D employees, the CM said he has been arguing about it as a minister and now that he has the power, he would ensure that it happens. The CM said he had asked the officials to start the process of providing one lakh more jobs. He added that his focus was that poor cannot be helped by Atta Dal scheme and their real help would be to empower them through education and creating employment opportunities for them.
‘RAHUL GANDHI SENT HIS OWN PLANE FOR ME TO TAKE EXAM’
Recounting the hardships he faced during his school and college days, Channi said, “On one occasion, I had to appear for an examination but ticket distribution was to be discussed on the same day. I told our party high command that I could not miss the exam. Rahul Gandhi was so kind that he sent his plane. I came to the centre, took the exam and returned on the same day. He was kind and I was determined. I completed my post graduation and am now doing my PhD. Last night also I sat with my guide from 2am to 3am as I want to complete my thesis by December,” he said. Channi also recalled the time his brother worked hard and retired as engineer-in-chief after starting his career as a junior engineer.
