Chandigarh: Composting plant processing less than 1/3rd of kitchen waste | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: The composting plant on the premises of the Dadumajra garbage processing plant in 2017 is processing merely 80 to 90 metric tonne (MT) of wet or kitchen waste against its capacity of 300 metric tonne.
The MC has now decided to improve its processing capacity.
“Since the detailed project report of the energy-to-waste technology based plant will be prepared by technical experts, as decided by the general house meeting on Thursday, all relevant points related to upgrade the capacity of the composting plant will also be there so that we can simultaneously prepare the details for the holistic improvement of solid waste management in the city,” MC commissioner K K Yadav told TOI. “As the composting plant and machinery are already there, we are hopeful that it will be upgraded before than the waste to energy plant,” he added.
Yadav said the Jaypee group had claimed to process 300MT wet waste but the ground reality was different. “It emerged the company was processing around 60 to 70 MT, which we tried to bring between 80 and 90 MT, which is the current status, and so, it needs improvement and upgradation,” Yadav said.
The composting plant was set up after NGT had asked the company in 2017 to install it at any cost to process the waste. The tribunal had also directed the MC then not to intervene in the functioning of the company and had formed a special committee to monitor works by it. The company had claimed in 2017 that the project of compost plant had cost them to nearly Rs 5 crore.
