CHANDIGARH: With an average of over three deaths a day, Mucormycosis has posed yet another challenge for the medical colleges and hospitals across the state. Till Friday, state has reported 1,619 cases and 194 deaths so far from 18 districts of the state.
Gurgaon, Hisar and Rohtak occupy top three slots with 45,42 and 36 deaths respectively. The three district have got the maximum mucor cases with Rohtak topping the table with 410 cases followed by 380 in Hisar and 326 in Gurgaon.
Faridabad has reported 143 cases and 18 deaths followed by Karnal with 118 cases and 14 deaths so far. While Panipat has reported 73 cases and 10 deaths , Sirsa 53 cases nine deaths, Nuh 51 cases and five deaths. Rest of the districts have reported 13 or less cases and deaths.
“It is only due to the timely and quick treatment and easy availability of drug as well as infrastructure that we still have less fatalities. Most of the fatalities are those having the comorbidities,’’ said a faculty at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak.
Mucor cases had started coming up in hospitals of Sirsa, Gurgaon and Hisar since the first week of May. But, it was on May 17 that the Haryana government notified it as a disease and made it mandatory for the hospitals to upload the details of such patients on government websites.
Initially there were hiccups in the procurement of drugs like Amphotericin B, but the state now claim to have sufficient stocks of drugs that are provided to patients directly, free of cost.
Haryana has also reserved beds in district hospitals and government medical colleges across the state where the patients are provided free treatment. Government has also fixed rates for private hospitals and medical colleges.
