After meeting Sonia, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh says ‘don’t know anything about Sidhu sa’ab’ | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: Amid the internal turmoil in Punjab Congress, chief minister Amarinder Singh met Sonia Gandhi in Delhi on Tuesday and said he would accept whatever decision is taken by the Congress president. Asked whether Navjot Singh Sidhu would get a key role, he replied: “I don’t know anything about Sidhu Sa’ab.”
The meeting comes amid talk of changes in the Punjab Cabinet and the party’s organisational structure, including the state president, besides attempts by the party high command to bring about a truce between Amarinder and Sidhu.
After his one-and-a-half-hour meeting with Sonia, Amarinder told media persons: “I had come to meet the Congress president to discuss the internal matters of the party, including political and developmental issues. Whatever decision is taken by the Congress president about the party in Punjab or any other political activity, we are all geared up to act on the decision and for the coming elections.”
Asked about the speculation that Sidhu would be given a bigger responsibility in the state, Amarinder said, “I don’t know anything about Sidhu Sa’ab. I discussed the state’s functioning work and political issues with the Congress president. Whatever is taken from here will be implemented.”
Sonia meeting had fuelled hopes of early resolution
Replying to a question about Sidhu’s jibes, the CM added, “Ask him, not me.”
It is also believed that Amarinder remained largely evasive on a new role for Sidhu and left it to the party high command to take the call. Sources said Amarinder referred to the offers he had made to Sidhu to bring him back into his Cabinet. However, the chief minister did point out the acts of indiscipline by Sidhu before he met Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra last week, added the sources. Amarinder has already opposed the proposal to make Sidhu the Punjab PCC president earlier.
The CM’s meeting with Sonia had led to an expectation of early resolution in the ongoing feud between Amarinder and Sidhu.
The sources said Amarinder was armed with details of major Cabinet decisions taken recently and progress in the Kotkapura firing case investigation for his meeting. He is also believed to have given his suggestions on the proposed changes in the state Congress unit. Rajya Sabha MP Mallikarjun Kharge, who headed the three-member AICC panel to take feedback from over 150 state Congress leaders was also present during the meeting.
Amarinder travelled from Chandigarh on the state helicopter to reach Delhi on Tuesday afternoon and the meeting with Sonia was scheduled at 5.30 pm. Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, Amritsar (West) MLA Raj Kumar Verka and former MLA Ashwani Sekhri reached Kapurthala House to meet Amarinder in a display of loyalty to the chief minister.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also met Sonia before the latter’s meeting with Amarinder, added the sources.
Earlier in the day, Verka said, “Changes in the Cabinet and reshuffle in the party organisation will be discussed by the CM with Soniaji. Suggestions like who could be inducted into the Congress or dropped will be discussed. The interaction will be on these counts and whatever decision is announced will be acceptable to all party leaders.”
Asked about Sidhu’s role as he has already rejected the position of deputy chief minister, Verka said lists of new positions will be announced shortly and it will put an end to all controversies.
