With one third of Covid deaths in Chandigarh, May was ruthless | Chandigarh News

CHANDIGARH: May was a brutal month for the city. Coronavirus infection killed 275 residents in those 31 days, accounting for 34% of the death toll of 804 — one of the highest since the pandemic began.
The virus has claimed 484 lives since the start of this year, with 57% of these fatalities reported in May alone. In 2020, Covid had killed 318 people.
Public health experts said as the cases went up, the death count increased. “That is why in May, the deaths were the highest. The second wave was at its peak then,” said an expert. “As the number of cases was much higher than the first wave, the deaths were proportionally the same. However, we saw deaths among younger and middle-aged people. Last year, most of the victims were elderly,” said another expert.
The city has 61,358 confirmed cases as of Friday, and 1.3% of these patients had died, according to data of the UT administration. There were 41,511 confirmed cases from January, making up for 68% of the total.
Researchers have attributed the faster transmission of the virus to the Delta (first found in India) and the UK variants. “Samples sent from the city had found the UK variant in them. We have yet to test for the Delta variant, but undoubtedly, the strain has been prevalent throughout,” said a faculty member in PGI.
The second wave had led to more ICU admissions too. “There had been a majority of cases where there was Covid pneumonia and other respiratory complications that required oxygen therapy,” said a doctor in PGI.
