Punjab: Suicide bid, threats at teachers’ protest in Mohali | Chandigarh News

MOHALI: A member of a teachers’ union demanding regularisation of jobs allegedly consumed a poisonous substance in a suicide attempt during a gherao of the Punjab School Education Board building in Sector 62 here on Wednesday.
Rajvir Kaur from Abohar was taken to a private hospital. She was discharged after treatment. She said she would end her life as Punjab government was not listening to their demands. Hundreds of teachers, mostly from primary schools, had blocked the entry and exit points of the building, forcing education department and board employees to leave their vehicles on the premises and scale the walls to go back to their homes.
Some of the teachers — Satinder Kang, Kulvinder Nardu, Samarjit Mansa, Kulbir Fazilka and Beant Singh Patiala — climbed atop the office building with bottles of petrol in their hands and threatened to set themselves on fire if no one from the education ministry came to have a dialogue with them.
Temporary Teachers’ Union leaders Jhujar Singh Sangrur and Ranjit Singh Bhattiwal said chief minister Amarinder Singh before the elections in 2016 had come to their protest site and promised that once his government comes to power, he would regularise the services of teachers. He said, “More than four years have passed and the state government has not lived up to its promise. So, we have decided to hold massive protest till any one from government comes and gives us assurance. We also demand our salary be increased to Rs 40,000.”
